Islamabad police granted 3-day physical remand of Imaan Mazari, Ali Wazir in sedition case
ISLAMABAD: PTM leader Ali Wazir and human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari were handed over to police custody for a three-day physical remand by Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Monday.
The prosecution had requested a 10-day physical remand for the suspects in connection to charges of sedition, intimidation, and incitement. These charges were filed after their controversial speech at a recent PTM rally in the capital.
Both Imaan and Wazir were arrested by Islamabad police in the early hours of Sunday and their remand was granted by a local court later the same day.
Presenting Imaan in the anti-terrorism court, her lawyer informed the bench that she had been remanded into police custody for a day. The lawyer questioned the lack of evidence against Imaan and inquired about tests to verify her speech's authenticity.
Wazir, a former National Assembly member, maintained during the hearing that nothing inappropriate was said during the rally.
Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain eventually granted a three-day remand for both Imaan and Wazir, reserving judgment on the prosecution's request for a 10-day remand.
Imaan's mother, former human rights minister Shireen Mazari, expressed concern for her daughter's well-being, alleging that Imaan fainted while being taken away by the police. She highlighted the risks to Imaan's life in custody, emphasizing her role as a human rights lawyer.
Mazari called for Imaan's release, reassuring the court that her daughter would attend court appearances.
