Earthquake of 5.1 magnitude shakes southern part of California; no injuries.

Authorities in southern California reported on Sunday that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Ojai, causing widespread tremors throughout the region. This seismic event coincided with the approach of powerful hurricane Hilary to the state.

The US Tsunami Warning System promptly reassured the public, stating that there was no threat of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake. At this time, there are no immediate reports of damage. However, emergency officials from Ventura County noted that the quake was widely felt across the area.

The epicenter of the earthquake was situated four miles southeast of Ojai and 10 miles northeast of Ventura. The location, a remote area on Sulphar Mountain, is approximately 60 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The tremors extended to various locations, including Malibu, Porter Ranch, parts of Los Angeles, and Manhattan Beach.

Authorities from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department conducted an aerial survey of Lake Casitas Dam, Matilija Dam, and the city of Ojai. Fortunately, no damage was observed.

Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones shared her insights with the US media, describing the location of the earthquake as "interesting." She highlighted that this is the first occurrence of a magnitude 5 earthquake in this exact location since 1932, within the Ventura basin. Notably, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in 1941 west of the recent quake's location, and some aftershocks from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake were situated to the east.

Scott Thomsen, the Ventura County Fire Director of Communications, revealed that the department swiftly executed its earthquake plan, involving the removal of trucks from firehouses. Although no damage reports have emerged so far, assessments are ongoing.

Thomsen pointed out the unique timing of the earthquake, occurring just as officials were preparing for the impact of Tropical Storm Hilary. He remarked, "We are in the middle of the first tropical storm since 1939, and we just had an earthquake."

According to calculations by the USGS, the earthquake's intensity was rated as moderate on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. This level of intensity has the potential to shatter windows, displace unstable objects, and halt pendulum clocks.

County officials clarified that the earthquake took place along the Sisar fault system.
