Donald Trump to skip Republican presidential debates citing popularity

In a notable turn of events, former US President Donald Trump, who has faced four indictments, has decided not to participate in the upcoming first Republican presidential debate set for Wednesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump stated that he believes he doesn't need to showcase his successful presidency since the American public is already familiar with his achievements.

Using his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced his decision with a straightforward message: "I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!"

This move comes as recent polls, including a CBS News survey published on Sunday, place Trump as the clear frontrunner in the Republican field. Despite being indicted four times this year, including charges related to undermining US democracy and the 2020 election results, 62% of the polled individuals indicated they would vote for him.

The CBS poll identified Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the closest contender for the White House bid, polling at 16%, while other candidates lag behind in single digits.

Trump pointed out that DeSantis is "crashing like an ailing bird" and emphasized that his successful presidency, marked by accomplishments in energy, border security, the military, and the economy, speaks for itself.

Already considering skipping the debate to avoid sharing the spotlight with lower-polling rivals, Trump's decision was further confirmed when The New York Times reported his intention to participate in an online interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead of attending the Fox News-organized event.

Although Trump won't be physically present, he remains a target for criticisms from opponents due to the seven ongoing trials, both criminal and civil, that involve allegations spanning his tenure and after.

Even without his physical presence, Trump's legal issues are anticipated to impact the debate, as candidates have been questioned extensively about ongoing court cases. Fox News host Bret Baier, who is moderating the debate, highlighted that Trump's presence or absence would inevitably shape the discussion.

Seven other candidates, including state governors, former vice president Mike Pence, Trump's UN ambassador Nikki Haley, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, have qualified for the debate. While Trump leads in polling, some supporters are concerned that his absence might allow rivals to seize the moment and gain momentum.
