Profile: New NAB chief also served as Peshawar corps commander

 

On Saturday, the Prime Minister of Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif, designated Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad as the new head of the National Accountability Bureau. This decision was made after discussions with Raja Riaz, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
Lt. Gen (Retd) Nazir Ahmad was a highly distinguished officer of the Pakistan Army, who served for over 40 years. He was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 1954 and obtained his early education from Rawalpindi and Lahore. He later joined the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul in 1972, where he was commissioned as an officer in 1974.
During his illustrious career, Lt. Gen (Retd) Nazir Ahmad held various important command and staff appointments. He served as a Brigade Commander in Siachen, where he successfully planned and executed several operations against Indian forces. He was also the Chief of Staff of a Corps during the Kargil War in 1999, where he played a key role in the planning and execution of the operation.
Lt. Gen (Retd) Nazir Ahmad also served as the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Pakistan Army. He was instrumental in planning and executing the successful military operations against militants in Swat and South Waziristan. He was also responsible for the coordination of military operations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
After retiring from the army in 2011, Lt. Gen (Retd) Nazir Ahmad served as the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan. He played a key role in managing several natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes, during his tenure.
In addition to his military and disaster management career, Lt. Gen (Retd) Nazir Ahmad was also a prolific writer and commentator on national security issues. He wrote several articles and books on topics related to national security and military affairs. He was a regular contributor to newspapers and TV channels in Pakistan and was highly respected for his insights and analysis.
