Senior lawyer Latif Khosa and other members of the legal team of PTI Chairman Imran Khan rescued from a malfunctioning elevator at the IHC on August 25 |
In a recent incident, Senior lawyer Latif Khosa and Naeem Haider Panjotha, who are representing the former prime minister in the Toshakhana case, along with other members of his legal team, found themselves trapped in a malfunctioning elevator at the high court.
The situation unfolded after Khosa and fellow lawyers had presented their arguments on a plea to suspend the punishment of the former prime minister, who was ousted from office last year through a no-confidence motion. This plea sought to halt the three-year jail term handed to the deposed premier as part of the Toshakhana case.
A total of 19 individuals, including a member of the media, were inside the elevator when it unexpectedly came to a halt.
After waiting for more than 30 minutes, a fire and rescue team arrived at the scene and successfully extricated the lawyers from the elevator, which had become stuck on the second floor of the Islamabad High Court.
The incident began at 12 noon when the group entered the elevator on the third floor of the court building. Thankfully, by 12:45 pm, the lawyers had been rescued from their predicament.
The former ruling party strongly condemned the occurrence and called upon President Arif Alvi and Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial to initiate an immediate investigation into the matter.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) also voiced its concerns regarding the incident. They noted, "Surprisingly, the IHC staff took no prompt action to assist."
"Senior lawyer Latif Khosa and others were stuck in the elevator for nearly an hour at the IHC," the SCBA remarked.
The SCBA pressed the IHC chief justice and other relevant authorities to promptly investigate the incident. They expressed gratitude that no lives were lost during the incident.
The SCBA expressed its hope that the investigation would reveal the true motives behind the incident.
"It needs to be determined whether the incident resulted from a technical malfunction or if it was an attempt on Latif Khosa's and the other lawyers' lives."
The apex body of lawyers also conveyed optimism that measures would be implemented to avert such incidents in the future.
