PTI Chairman Imran Khan (C) leaves after appearing in the Supreme Court in Islamabad on July 24, 2023 |
Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, currently incarcerated at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Attock jail, faced an intense inquiry by a special Joint Investigation Team (JIT) authorized by an anti-terrorism court (ATC). The investigation stems from the nationwide mayhem on May 9 and is accompanied by court-sanctioned permissions to interrogate Khan in six additional cases.
The five-member JIT, comprising high-ranking officials, visited Attock Jail to question Khan, who is serving a three-year sentence for his conviction in the Toshakhana case. This probing extends to cases involving sedition and anti-terrorism charges.
In the interrogation, the former prime minister, ousted from office through a no-confidence motion in April 2023, faced questions about charges added under sections 121, 131, and 146 from the initial FIR. These sections pertain to waging war against Pakistan, abetting mutiny, and rioting.
The investigation also addressed several other offences, including sections 120, 120-A, 120-B, 121-A, 505, 153, 153-A, 153-B, and 107 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Khan's alleged involvement in attacks on Askari Tower, Shadman police station, and the burning of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) offices in Lahore's Model Town and Jinnah House were probed. Jinnah House is also the residence of the corps commander.

The JIT, chaired by the DIG (Investigations), Lahore, sought permission to question and apprehend Khan in an FIR pertaining to the attack on Jinnah House.
The riots on May 9 were triggered nationwide following the arrest of the deposed prime minister in the £190 million settlement case. The ensuing violence resulted in the detention of numerous PTI workers and senior leaders, accused of orchestrating attacks on military installations.
During these protests, several locations including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi were targeted. The military labeled May 9 as a "Black Day" and opted to prosecute the protesters under the Army Act.
The police added provisions to the case diary on August 18 to investigate Khan's involvement in the violence, leading to their request for permission from the anti-terrorism court. Judge Ejaz Ahmad Buttar granted the request, thereby initiating the current probe.
