Split verdict: Supreme Court orders to hold polls in KP and Punjab within 90 days

The Supreme Court has ordered elections for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies to be held within 90 days.

The split verdict was given by a five-member bench, with three in favor and two against. The court ruled that elections must be held within 90 days after assembly dissolution, with the KP Assembly having been dissolved by the governor and the Punjab Assembly having dissolved on its own. The issue was raised in a suo motu notice to assess who is responsible for setting election dates. Political parties were asked to agree on a mutual date, but disagreement arose. Four judges had objected to the bench's constitution and jurisdiction.
