Mandalay was the 'city of gold' - now it reeks of death

Mandalay, once known as the City of Gold, is now a city of sorrow and destruction after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The devastating quake and its aftershocks have caused over 2,700 deaths, with more than 4,500 injured and hundreds still missing. The disaster has overwhelmed local authorities, forcing mass cremations due to the sheer number of casualties.

Unimaginable Loss and Chaos

The earthquake left thousands of homes, religious sites, and major buildings reduced to rubble. Survivors, many of whom lost their families, are left homeless, starving, and desperate for help. Bodies are still being pulled from the debris, and officials fear that the death toll may exceed 10,000 as more collapsed buildings are searched.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

With limited resources, rescue operations are struggling. The lack of food, clean water, and medical supplies is worsening the suffering of survivors. Many families are sleeping in the open, fearing aftershocks could bring down the remaining structures.

The international community, including Russia and China, has sent aid, but humanitarian workers report challenges in accessing quake-stricken areas due to military restrictions. Meanwhile, the military continues its attacks on villages, drawing global criticism even as the country reels from this catastrophe.

A Plea for Urgent Help

The people of Mandalay and other affected regions desperately need humanitarian aid. Organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International are urging the Myanmar government to allow unrestricted relief efforts.
