The Tragic End of the Pashtun Girl from Junagadh’s Nawab Family: Parveen Babi

Parveen Babi hailed from the prestigious Nawab family of Junagadh. In the 1970s and 80s, she was one of the leading actresses in the Indian film industry, starring alongside top actors of her time. She delivered iconic performances in films like Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony, and Kaala Patthar with Amitabh Bachchan.

Throughout her career, Parveen had relationships with prominent figures such as Kabir Bedi and Mahesh Bhatt, but she never married—a decision that would later prove to be a grave mistake.

As she aged, the men she had relationships with moved on, chasing younger actresses, and her career opportunities in films dried up.

First, she was diagnosed with diabetes. Later, she developed paranoid schizophrenia, a mental illness that caused her to hear strange voices and become consumed by delusions. She would often lock herself in her room for days at a time, distancing herself from the outside world.

Due to complications from diabetes, she developed gangrene in one of her legs, which turned black and became useless. After enduring immense physical and mental suffering, she was found dead in her room. Her body remained undiscovered for three days. Parveen Babi was just 55 years old.

When her funeral was held, it was expected that her thousands of fans would attend. However, only a few friends came, surprised by the absence of the public. Her burial was completed by just a handful of people.

This is the story of the impermanence of life, fame, and lineage. Despite this, many people, at the peak of their success, believe they will never face decline. They think their youth and beauty will last forever.

During a conversation with young women, renowned writer Bano Qudsia once offered a wise piece of advice. She said that nature has entrusted women with the responsibility of carrying forward the human race. Therefore, marriage and family should be a priority. Without it, women may experience a deep sense of regret that can haunt them for life.

She further advised that even if an ideal partner isn’t found, one should still marry. With age, certain problems arise that cannot be foreseen in youth, making the end of life difficult and painful.
