| Punjab govt to ‘restore’ churches, Christians’ homes ransacked during Jaranwala violence: Naqvi |
The caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, promised to fix all the damaged churches and homes within the next three to four days after they were attacked and set on fire during violent events in Jaranwala. The violence happened the day before when a large mob burned down five churches and targeted the homes of Christian people.
The incident also led to the destruction of a Christian cemetery and the office of a local official. In response, the government called in law enforcement personnel to control the situation. The violence was triggered by rumors of desecrated Quran pages near the house of two Christian brothers.
Due to the situation, the local authorities imposed a restriction on public gatherings for a week, except for government-approved events. The Punjab government set up a committee to investigate the incident, and religious leaders condemned the violence as against Islamic teachings.
Mohsin Naqvi expressed his condemnation of the violence and called it a planned conspiracy to disrupt peace in the country. He stressed the importance of unity among all Pakistanis and vowed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, the Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, apologized for the violence and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the Christian community. He criticized the actions of the attackers and demanded swift punishment for them.
The violence was sparked by allegations of blasphemy, and it quickly escalated with the involvement of different groups. Numerous arrests were made, and the situation led to the burning of churches, homes, and public property. Christian community leaders reported that multiple churches and a graveyard were vandalized.
The local deputy commissioner declared a holiday due to the law and order situation. The incident highlighted the importance of unity and respect among different religious groups in the country.
