Nawaz Sharif Set to Return to Pakistan in October, Election Campaign Awaited

London, August 25, 2023

Amidst fervent speculation and anticipation, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif is confirmed to make his return to Pakistan in October, as announced by party President Shehbaz Sharif. The decision was made following a strategic meeting held in London.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his elder brother Shehbaz Sharif addressed the media, disclosing the plan for Nawaz's imminent return and his subsequent leadership of the election campaign. While the specific return date remains undisclosed, family sources, in communication with Geo News ahead of the meeting, suggested a tentative return on October 15 of this year.

According to insiders, the date of October 15 was agreed upon during discussions among Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and other close family members in London. The timing was reportedly selected to coincide with more moderate weather conditions and to facilitate more extensive political gatherings compared to the scorching heat of September.

Earlier reports had indicated a possible return for Nawaz Sharif by mid-September. However, recent developments, including the Election Commission of Pakistan's announcement that elections would not be feasible within 90 days, led to a reconsideration of the timeline. Party loyalists advised the delay to allow for a more comfortable climate for large-scale political activities.

Shehbaz Sharif's two meetings with Nawaz Sharif in London played a pivotal role in the decision-making process. Shehbaz Sharif, who arrived in London after passing the reins to Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, expressed the significance of considering weather conditions in determining Nawaz Sharif's return date. A trusted source indicated that the October 15 date was a result of these considerations, with room for further discussions if necessary.

The choice of timing also appears to be influenced by the upcoming retirement of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial. Nawaz Sharif and the PML-N have expressed reservations about the current judiciary's perceived bias towards the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party. In a recent outburst, Nawaz Sharif criticized the judiciary for alleged mistreatment and favoritism, particularly towards PTI leader Imran Khan.

Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan, after his extended stay in Europe and the Middle East for medical treatment, marks a significant development in the country's political landscape. As October approaches, all eyes are on the political scene, awaiting Nawaz Sharif's return and the subsequent electoral campaign under his leadership.
