China holds large-scale military drills around Taiwan

China has launched large-scale military exercises surrounding Taiwan, deploying its army, navy, air, and rocket forces in what Beijing calls a “precision strike” and blockade simulation of the self-ruled island.

Taiwan responded swiftly, mobilizing fighter jets, warships, and land-based missile systems to counter the largest Chinese naval presence in nearly a year.

Military Show of Force

China’s Eastern Theater Command confirmed that the drills included:
Sea-air combat patrols
Maritime and ground assault simulations
Blockades on key sea lanes
Multi-directional precision strikes

Beijing’s Shandong aircraft carrier group led the operation, backed by 21 warships, 71 aircraft, and four coast guard vessels—the highest naval deployment since May 2024, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry.

U.S. & Global Reactions

The exercises follow a warning from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who recently pledged "credible deterrence" in the Taiwan Strait. China’s move is widely seen as a direct response to U.S. commitments to Taiwan.

Escalating Cross-Strait Tensions

Since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te took office in May 2024, tensions have soared. China has intensified military pressure, with frequent fighter jet incursions and naval drills near Taiwan.

Chinese officials warned that pursuing Taiwan independence could lead to war, with Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office stating, “Those seeking Taiwan independence are pushing the people into a dangerous situation.”

With both sides on high alert, the region remains on edge, as the world watches for further escalations.
