What is this nation's connection with revolution?

Meet Nizar Qabani, a distinguished Arab poet born in the heart of Damascus, Syria. He shares a profound connection with the historic city of Damascus, known for its rich artistic and literary heritage since Roman times.

Qabani's influence extends beyond the realms of art and literature; his warm hospitality is celebrated as well. Originating from Beirut, he left an indelible mark in Geneva, using his poetry to convey the pain of his homeland, particularly lamenting the plight of Jerusalem.

His powerful verses resonated like a piercing scream, capturing the attention of even the deaf. One of his most famous poems, "Arabism," continues to echo the spirit of rebellion in the Arab world:

"We are the sincere Arabs,

Descendants of strength, pillars of clay,

Like the olive tree's fingers,

Our history we carve in the depths,

With every memory engraved,

Obstacles we overcome, pearls on a string."

Nizar Qabani, a revered cultural icon in the Arab world, embodied a multifaceted persona. Not confined to the role of a mere poet or literary figure, he actively engaged in various social and political realms. While he was an esteemed poet and intellectual, his heart resonated profoundly with Shakespeare's works, particularly "Hamlet," reflecting his deep admiration for England.

"Can one ever liken your beauty to a star? A fleeting comparison, for your beauty is eternal." This sentiment earned him the moniker "Bard of Avon," a homage to Shakespeare's brilliance. Just as Goethe's writings left an indelible mark on German literature, Qabani's influence on Arabic literature is undeniable. While his name is associated with the era of the "Holy Roman Empire," today, he is remembered as a towering literary figure in the Arabic world.

Similarly, in the Indian literary realm, Rabindranath Tagore holds a similar stature. Titles such as "Bard of Bengal" and "Great Master" are attributed to him. His poetry and writings have deeply permeated Indian culture and national identity. Figures like Ibn Arabi, Sheikh Saadi, Hafez Shirazi, Fariduddin Attar, Shams Tabriz, and Rumi stand as prominent icons of their respective eras, leaving a lasting impact on society and thought.

These intellectual giants have exemplified transformative influence in their times. Just as society evolves under the sway of literature and art, they played pivotal roles in shaping political, social, cultural, and ethical shifts. Their legacies continue to illuminate and inspire, resonating through the ages. The ancient Greek poets are another testament to culture's power to shape societies and uplift the human spirit.

Transitioning to more recent history, the 17th-century Renaissance challenged the Church's dominance in art and literature. This era heralded a shift in thought, as writers and artists like Voltaire and Rousseau questioned societal norms and the abuses of power by monarchies and aristocracies. In 1784, Pierre Beaumarchais presented his influential play "The Marriage of Figaro," critiquing the privileged class and aristocratic systems, a sentiment that reverberated throughout Europe.

The French Revolution of 1789, beyond its political impact, gave rise to revolutionary songs and performances that empowered the masses. The anthem "La Marseillaise" became a symbol of the revolution, a potent tool for mobilization. Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle's composition ignited the revolutionary spirit and remains France's national anthem to this day.

These examples underscore how literary and artistic expression can mold societies, challenge power dynamics, and usher in societal transformations. The likes of Nizar Qabani and Rabindranath Tagore, alongside historical figures like Shakespeare, Goethe, and the French Revolutionaries, epitomize culture's profound influence on human history and its capacity to drive change.

The French Revolution indeed triggered profound revolutionary changes across Europe. Throughout history, individuals' roles and actions have shaped nations in various circumstances. While the city of Troy may not mirror France, Homer's famous lines from the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" still reverberate today. In Ali Baba's tale "The Forty Thieves," it is said: "Sometimes, an individual within a society can alter a path as forcefully as a lightning bolt." Thus, throughout history, individuals and their deeds have been instrumental in effecting significant change.

Conversely, while the names of Darashikoh and Aurangzeb may not resonate as widely in Sindh's history as those of Maratha warriors and Mughal rulers, the contributions of Shah Latif and Sachal Sarmast echo even more resoundingly. Perhaps Sindh's history has yet to realize its full potential. Nonetheless, luminaries such as Shah Inayat, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, and Dullah Darya Khan have bequeathed legacies that continue to inspire today.

In the present day, the struggle for rights and the awakening of conscience persist in Sindh. Figures like Shah Inayat, Shaheed Bhutto, Shah Makhdoom Bilawal, and Darya Khan have displayed extraordinary courage and political acumen, infusing light into people's hearts. Their actions reflect a profound love for their homeland and a commitment to the greater good of their enlightened classes.

Now is the time for pragmatic political efforts that extend beyond criticizing political, social, and cultural organizations on social media. In Sindh, the degradation caused by many political families is evident. However, amidst this turmoil, signs of progress emerge. Even today, the beacon of thought shines brighter in every corner of Sindh than ever before.

The current state of Sindh mirrors the consequences of political decay and the ensuing struggle. Pir Pagara and his followers have faced violence within their homes, witnessing their villages burn. Dissenting voices have been stifled. Each new ruler adds to the people's burdens. Ultimately, it's the people who bear the weight, silently enduring their suffering, while practical political struggle seems remote.

The very political families once thought to be saviors now contribute to the decay. Driven by the shackles of power, they wield culture and nature as mere tools, motivated by greed rather than the greater good. As the 19th century closes and the 20th dawns, European powers colonize Africa to bolster their economies. Belgium's King Leopold II exploits Africa's resources and oppresses its indigenous people. During this time, the pursuit of personal wealth overshadows cultural heritage and disrupts societal foundations.

In the contemporary Sindh political landscape, visionary leaders who genuinely represent their people's interests are lacking. Descendants of political leaders often lead isolated lives, imprisoned by their own arrogance. The significance of cultural and natural beauty is underestimated, and their duty to the people has faded. The deep connection to Sindh's sandy shores, majestic mountains, Gork, Karunjhar, and the unity of its diverse landscapes has been overshadowed.

Nevertheless, hope endures through the strength of those who fight for justice and their people's rights. Amidst the chaos, the future of Sindh remains promising. The struggle for Sindh's prosperity, development, and preservation of its rich heritage endures, propelled by individuals who grasp the true essence of their land and their place in history. As the poet Lord Byron eloquently expressed, "Wealth is the genie's lamp of Aladdin, lighting up nothing but itself."

As history has repeatedly shown, individuals possess the power to influence nations, shaping the course of societies in profound ways. The journey of change ignited by these remarkable figures remains a testament to the enduring impact of culture and literature on the trajectory of human civilization.
