A 16 killed, 15 injured as passenger bus catches fire near Pindi Bhattian

A bus carrying around 35 to 40 people caught fire shortly after colliding with a pick-up truck carrying diesel drums on the Faisalabad Motorway near Pindi Bhattian. Tragically, as many as 16 individuals, including women and children, lost their lives, and 15 others were injured in the incident that occurred early Sunday.

The bus, which was en route from Karachi to Islamabad, collided with the pick-up van at around 4am near the Pindi-Bhattian Interchange. The fire engulfed the bus after the collision. Nearby bystanders attempted to rescue passengers by breaking windows, and the injured were transported to Pindi Bhattian and Faisalabad Hospital.

Four individuals are in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment. District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Fahad reported that 18 bodies were recovered from the bus and will undergo identification through DNA testing.

This unfortunate incident highlights the recurring issue of highway accidents that have claimed numerous lives. In a previous accident in July, a bus overturned in Punjab's Rajanpur district, resulting in five deaths and 20 injuries. Another tragedy in the Geeti-Das area near Babusar Top resulted in eight deaths and several injuries, as the tourist bus fell into a gorge and caught fire.

Similar accidents have occurred earlier as well, with six lives lost in the Thalichi area of Diamer district and 12 fatalities, along with 24 injuries, on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway near Kallar Kahar.

The accidents have prompted authorities to take action, including lane closures on major motorways, to ensure safer travel conditions.
