Increasing Incidence of Brain Tumors: A Call for Awareness and Advanced Treatment

Dr. Aurangzeb stated that the incidence of brain tumors has increased in recent years, affecting approximately 10 to 12 out of every million people. World Brain Tumor Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the disease.

He explained that a brain tumor is typically referred to as a primary or secondary tumor. The primary tumor originates within the brain, while the secondary tumor develops in another part of the body and spreads to the brain.

Describing the symptoms of the disease, Dr. Aurangzeb mentioned severe, persistent headaches unresponsive to medication, decreased vision, weakness in the arms and legs, tremors, and difficulty in mobility as common indicators.

He further highlighted that NCCI Karachi is Pakistan's most advanced institution for brain tumor treatment. They have successfully treated patients for the past 15 years, with over 5,000 cases of successful recovery.

Dr. Aurangzeb credited Professor Abdul Sattar Hashim as the pioneer of this work, who initiated it many years ago. Previously, patients had to seek treatment abroad, but now they can be treated locally. This practice has been ongoing for the past 15 years, and they also treat cancers occurring in other parts of the body.

The neurosurgeon emphasized that the treatment provided at NCCI is affordable and comparatively inexpensive compared to other countries like Iran and Afghanistan. As a result, patients from these countries and others choose to seek treatment at NCCI due to the affordable yet high-quality care available.

According to Dr. Aurangzeb, there is a lack of advanced medical equipment in Asia, including Pakistan, which could minimize the temporary damages caused by lengthy treatment procedures. Utilizing modern machinery allows for early disease identification, saving the patient both time and expenses.

He concluded by stating that the majority of patients benefit from the treatment at NCCI, with their tumors ceasing to grow, shrinking, or even disappearing. The treatment process also minimizes the risk of significant damage to the patient.
