Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been granted interim bail until March 9 by the Islamabad High Court in the attempted murder case filed against him by a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader last year. The bail was granted against surety bonds worth Rs100,000. The PML-N leader had filed the case after being attacked outside the Election Commission of Pakistan's office in Islamabad, where PTI workers and supporters were protesting ECP's verdict that disqualified their party chief in the Toshakhana case.
In October 2022, the ECP disqualified Imran Khan after finding him guilty of not sharing details of Toshakhana gifts and proceeds from their sale during his tenure as Prime Minister. A district and sessions court in Islamabad had also issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Khan in the Toshakhana case as he failed to appear before the court despite repeated orders.
On the same day, an anti-terrorism court and banking court granted interim bail to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after he appeared before them at the judicial complex. Sharif secured bail in the prohibited funding and terrorism cases filed against him. The cases were filed under 7ATA along with other sections of the PPC, as PTI workers took to the streets and vandalized state property following Khan's disqualification in the Toshakhana reference. The Federal Investigation Agency had also booked Khan in October 2022 for allegedly receiving prohibited funding.
Khan was scheduled to appear before three courts that day, including a prohibited funding case in a banking court, an anti-terrorism case, and the Toshakhana and an attempt to murder cases in the same court. However, as he arrived at the judicial complex in the federal capital, a large number of PTI workers entered the building by knocking its gate down, disrupting security arrangements at Sector G-11 of the judicial complex.
